br/Freedom Tower

/td

        /div

/p

“In the beginning, I was not specifically trying to take pictures of the towers,” Vergara said. “I was trying to take pictures of New York. But the towers showed up. They were sort of uninvited.”
p

/p

The native of Chile has spent the past 41 years traveling all over New York City, and across the Hudson River in New Jersey, snapping pictures of Lower Manhattan.
p

/p

“When we began discussing the exhibition for September 11th’s tenth anniversary, we decided that we wanted to create an exhibition that would celebrate the life of the Twin Towers and their place in the city,” says Sean Corcoran, the exhibit’s curator.
p

/p

Vergara photographed the towers everywhere they popped up. In Brooklyn, Queens, Jersey City, Hoboken and more. Vegara shows the towers punctuating the skyline behind junkyards, homeless people and housing projects, highlighting the city’s economic struggles of the 1970′s.
p

/p

“I was trying to show that contrast between the poverty and the hubris, you know the pride, that spirit, that will become bigger than anything else,” said Vergara. “Those were sort of the high times of the war of Vietnam. The towers were going up as a symbol of American power.”
p

/p

Vergara returned to the same vantage points over and over again, in the 80′s and 90′s, shooting thousands of feet of Kodachrome 64 film, showing the ever present towers looming large over an ever-changing city. Burning tires make way for parking lots in Jersey City. Gas tanks disappear from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Dilapidated buildings become luxury condos on the East River waterfront. But, the Twin Towers look the same in every frame.
p

/p

“I got as far as Chambers Street,” he said, “I would have gone closer, but the security people from the courthouses were out there with guns and they said ‘Look if you cross here or take a picture, we’ll break your camera right away.’ So, I walked and made my way to the Manhattan Bridge where I was able to take some of the pictures.”
p

/p

“The whole skyline had lost some basic element. Without the towers, there were beautiful skyscrapers, still a beautiful skyline, but it didn’t have the grandeur.”
p

/p

Now that the Port Authority is building One World Trade Center at the rate of one floor per week, Vergara’s lens is once again focusing on construction, and the changing skyline, just like it did during the building of the Twin Towers in the early 70′s.
p

/p

“It’s kind of unsettling coming up. It’s so big, it’s so massive,” said Vergara. “Even though the Trade Center was such an impressive and large thing, somehow it fit with everything,” Vergara said looking at an old photograph of the Twin Towers and then pointing to a recent picture of the unfinished new tower, “I don’t know if that’s going to work the same way.”

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) When volunteer John House shows people around the National Infantry Museum, he pauses next to an exhibit in the Vietnam-era section and points to one of the lifelike mannequins posed in a combat stance.
p

        div class=”alignleft” style=”align:left; padding:10px;”

td
img src=http://scrappuccino.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Flight_93-5294.jpg alt=”Flight 93″ title=”Flight 93″ /
br/Flight 93

/td

        /div

/p

A bronze statue of Rescorla looms just outside the National Infantry Museum. The bronze monument depicts Rescorla fighting in Vietnam but the pedestal describes Rescorla’s final battle on Sept. 11, 2001.
p

/p

As the head of security for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Rescorla evacuated 2,700 of his company’s employees from the World Trade Center. After everyone in his company got out safely, he rushed back inside to help more people. He died when the south tower collapsed.
p

/p

“The hero was a key part of the Sept. 11 narrative,” said Brian Monahan, a sociology professor at Iowa State University who has written a book about media coverage of the terror attacks.
p

/p

The stories of heroism have played a role in our understanding of the attacks, Monahan said. Reducing the stories to snippets and slogans for instance, “Let’s Roll,” which was the rallying cry of a man on the hijacked Flight 93 that day have imbued many Americans with a sense of patriotism, sacrifice and bravery.
p

/p

“‘Let’s Roll’ looks so cool on a bumper sticker, doesn’t it?” said Monahan. “Remember when President Bush said, ‘On a day when buildings fell, heroes rose?’ It’s like a movie poster.”
p

/p

There were the New York firefighters, police and paramedics who first responded to the burning towers. There were people like Welles Crowther, a 24-year-old equities trader who helped dozens of people to safety in the south tower before dying in the tower’s collapse. Construction manager Frank De Martini and construction inspector Pablo Ortiz were also heroes: they saved 77 people on the 88th floor of the north tower.
p

/p

There were also the 40 passengers and crew aboard Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pa. a group of people whose actions on that day, like Rescorla’s, have come to symbolize bravery during the worst possible moment.
p

/p

“On a grand scale, Sept. 11 provided us with a heroism of humanity,” said Al Mascherino, a former Roman Catholic priest who runs a chapel in Shanksville. “It showed that many people are capable of profound qualities of heroism and self-sacrifice. It is really the content of the human spirit.”
p

/p

According to the 9/11 Commission, the four terrorists who had hijacked the plane likely wanted to crash the Boeing 757-222 into the White House or Capitol building but downed the jet in the bucolic Pennsylvania field as passengers fought back. Tales of the passengers’ heroism culled from transcripts of their in-flight phone calls fill every Flight 93 memorial found in the small town, from a chapel dedicated to the 40 men and women to the $50 million memorial at the crash site.
p

/p

“It’s not inconsistent with the heroes and bravery that has been woven into the fabric of our country,” said Gordon Felt, whose brother Ed perished on Flight 93. “They chose as a group to act. They prayed. They fought. They were not going to go down without a fight. They wanted to survive, and their actions certainly helped avert another great disaster.”
p

/p

Inside the Flight 93 Chapel, visitors look at photos of the 40 men and women aboard the flight, while at the crash site memorial, people read the chilling transcripts of phone recordings and cockpit conversations during the plane’s final moments.
p

/p

Mascherino, who performs non-denominational services at the tiny chapel some three miles from the crash site, thinks that remembering the 40 people who died aboard Flight 93 as heroes also helps the living.
p

/p

“We are inspired by their courage and we are impressed and in awe of their sacrifice,” he said. “Sometimes heroes die. But death is not the earmark of heroism.”
p

/p

Honoring those heroes as a society has also provided a measure of healing for a grieving nation. Take Thomas Ullom, a firefighter in Westerville, Ohio.
p

/p

He worked for seven years to get a piece of the World Trade Center steel for display outside of his community’s firehouse. Ullom didn’t know anyone who died in the attacks, yet was profoundly sad afterwards. Bringing the twisted steel to town was his way of saying thank you to the New York heroes.
p

/p

There’s a gallery called “the Hall of Valor,” which displays the photos of nearly 1,500 Army infantrymen who have received the medal of honor for their military service. A few steps away, there’s a room that includes photos of the burning World Trade Center towers, an explanation that ties the attacks to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and artifacts collected by US soldiers from those wars.
p

/p

Many of the museum’s visitors are Army recruits who are training at nearby Fort Benning, and their families. House, the volunteer and former Army colonel, can spot the newly minted soldiers who visit because they are wearing blue pants and white shirts and because they have a laser-like focus on the museum’s depiction of battle scenes.
p

/p

Retired Col. John M. House stands near the memorial to retired Col. Rick Rescorla along the Walk of Honor at the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center in Columbus, Ga., outside the gates to the Fort Benning Army installation on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011. Rescorla, who fought in the Battle of Ia Drang in Vietnam (1965), was killed in the World Trade Center attack after leading the evacuation of nearly 3,000 people from the south tower. House tells the story of Rescorla as he leads tours through the museum. (AP Photo/Robin Trimarchi)

“I felt like we didn’t come out with our A game right off the bat, but it’s good to win a match like that when you don’t feel like you’re playing at your best,” BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said. “I’m glad we were able to get through that as a team and learn from it and get better. Wins are always positive things no matter what.”
p

/p

Opposite hitter Jennifer Hamson and outside hitter Christie Carpenter led the Cougars (7-2) to victory with eight kills each. Hamson also led in digs with 12, her third time reaching double-digit digs this season. Setter Heather Hanneman recorded 23 assists for BYU and middle blocker Nicole Warner contributed six blocks.
p

/p

CREIGHTON 3, WEBER STATE 0: At Lincoln, Neb., the Wildcats struggled in nearly every facet of play against a strong effort from the Creighton Bluejays on Friday afternoon.
p

/p

Held to a season-low 19 kills and a negative attack percentage for the first time this season, the Wildcats fell to the Bluejays 25-12, 25-13, 25-18 in their second match at the Players Challenge at NU Coliseum.
p

/p

Outside hitters Bethany Wray and Briana Wilms each had seven kills to lead the Wildcats. Wray, who added seven digs and four blocks, saw her streak of double-figures kills matches ended at nine.
p

/p

The Wildcats will remain in Lincoln for their final match of the Ameritas Players Challenge when it takes on tournament host and No. 11-ranked Nebraska on Saturday at 1 p.m.
p

/p

SLCC SPLITS TWO: At Houston, the third ranked Bruins fought to a two game split at the Patriots Day Tournament. The Bruins dropped game one in five sets to Lee College (25-15 21-25 25-14 19-25 15-17) and battled to a five set win over Panola College (20-25 25-18 25-19 19-25 15-6) The Bruins are 8-2 overall and they will face fourth ranked Blinn College tomorrow at the Patriots Day Tournament.
p

/p

The Bruins were unable to control the unforced errors in the five set loss. Leyla Redondo led Salt Lake with 15 kills, eight digs and two aces followed by Maddie Bushman’s nine kills and nine digs. Kellie Turner added eight kills with two aces.
p

/p

Alvaro Saborio scored from 10 yards away early in the 56th minute, and a rare gaffe by Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller resulted in an own goal as Real Salt Lake hung on for a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Saturday.
p

/p

From the first time he touched the ball on Lone Peak 039;s first possession until the last time when he helped run the clock out with an outstanding run in the fourth, Chase Hansen was in beast mode on Friday night.

/td

        /div

/p

Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans (CBS): Uh, Texans. The Colts were a nine point favorite with QB Peyton Manning. Not so much without him.
p

/p

Tennessee Titans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (CBS): You know what? I’m going with the Jags. I think RB Chris Johnson needs a little time to get back into NFL shape and QB Matt Hasselbeck won’t be firing on all cylinders in Week 1. Yeah, I know the Jags have their own turmoil but I have a feeling. (Whenever someone pulls out the “I just have feeling they’ll win” line, that’s a reminder not to take their advice seriously.)
p

/p

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Cleveland Browns (CBS): I’ll take the Browns. I’m a big fan of QB Colt McCoy. Plus, the Bengals are starting a rookie quarterback and a rookie receiver. They could be good but not in Week 1.
p

/p

Philadelphia Eagles vs. St. Louis Rams (FOX): The Dream Team rides again as the Eagles win this game. If the Rams had a legitimate home field advantage, I’d take them because I love QB Sam Bradford but I think the Eagles swipe this game.
p

/p

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens (CBS): Game of the week? These teams are ridiculously close over the last decade. Just a total guess here as to who wins. I’ll say the Ravens.
p

/p

Detroit Lions vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (FOX): This game’s blacked out in Tampa and I think the Lions will black them out (see what I did there?). I’ll take the Lions with Megatron blowing up.
p

/p

Minnesota Vikings vs. San Diego Chargers (FOX): The Chargers should win — should — but they won’t. They always start slow it seems. I’ll go with the Vikings as the biggest upset of the week. Everyone should have an upset of the week. This is mine.
p

/p

New York Giants vs. Washington Redskins (FOX): QB Eli Manning is on my fantasy team so that’s where my loyalty lies. Plus, Rex Grossman is quarterbacking the Redskins. I’m taking the Giants.
p

/p

Carolina Panthers vs. Arizona Cardinals (FOX): Gotta go with QB Kevin Kolb and the Cardinals. Can’t see QB Cam Newton winning his first career start.
p

/p

Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers (FOX): Hmm. Not really sure here so let’s go with the home team in San Fran. We’ll see what Jim Harbaugh has done with QB Alex Smith.
p

/p

New England Patriots vs. Miami Dolphins (ESPN): New England, of course. This is a sell out for Miami, by the way. Yes, they actually had to announce that the first game of the season — on Monday Night Football no less — was actually sold out.

There was as many Steeler fans as there was Chiefs fans. Normally that would be trouble for our offense but thanks to the Steeler fans, they couldn’t figure out when they were supposed to yell so they yelled when we yelled and Arrowhead was actually pretty loud for our defense and silent for the offense. Lots of trash talk by Steeler fans early on as well. Lots of sour faces leaving Arrowhead. The only bright spot in an otherwise uneventful season.

I used to be off on Fridays for my job from 2000-2006 and subbed for extra money in Southlake Carrol ISD (I lived in Grapevine worked in Southlake). Met Garret ten years ago when he was a freshman and told me he could make a 50-yd fg. I let cut out of class and made him take a girl as a holder to go to the practice field right outside the class. He made about 2 or 3 out of 10 attempts. Crazy kid never combed his hair and always wore either Southlake gear (green and white) or Ou gear. Let him do it a fewe other times throughout the years until he graduated in 04′ with Chase. Chase was more of a Napoleon complex though until nobody in Texas gave him the time of day to play qb in college.
p

/p

Armitage, 27, missed England 039;s Six Nations campaign because of a ban for pushing a doping official after a match against Bath on New Year 039;s Day.
p

/p

‘I didn 039;t even think I 039;d be over here, it 039;s a massive turnaround and shows if you work hard and do the right things, sometimes you get your reward.’
p

/p

Bath giant Matt Banahan has more experience on the wing than the London Irish man, who has never started a game there for England, but Armitage 039;s lively displays in England 039;s warm-up matches tipped the balance in his favour.
p

/p

Armitage, who received another ban for a punch on Northampton fly-half Stephen Myler in April, is also an assured presence under the high ball, which the Argentines are expected to rain down upon the England back three, and an extra kicking option.
p

/p

‘I 039;ve played on the wing a few times and nowadays the back three is the back three,’ added Armitage, one of 10 World Cup debutants in the England 22 for the game.
p

/p

/*![CDATA[*/ bbc.fmtj.av.emp.load( function() { var userAgent = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase(); if (bbc.fmtj.av.emp.loadProxyPlayer !== undefined  bbc.fmtj.page !== undefined  (bbc.fmtj.page.siteToServe === "news" || bbc.fmtj.page.siteToServe === "sport")  !(userAgent.search("safari")  -1  userAgent.search("version/3.")  -1)  !(userAgent.search("windows")  -1  userAgent.search("safari")  -1  userAgent.search("version/4.")  -1)  userAgent.search("android") == -1) { bbc.fmtj.av.emp.loadProxyPlayer("emp-14835676-143927"); }else{ bbc.fmtj.av.emp.loadEmp("emp-14835676-143927"); } }); /*]]*/ ‘I 039;m happy with the way I 039;m playing. I still need to get my counter-attack game going and improve my defence. But I play a lot better with a smile on my face and recently I 039;ve got back to that and enjoying my rugby again.
p

/p

‘The style England are playing, we want to throw the ball around and have a go, it suits me. Hopefully the back three can get the ball and enjoy themselves. It 039;s an enjoyable place to be at the moment, this England squad.’
p

/p

England manager Martin Johnson said that Sale wing Cueto, who has a lower back strain, could have played but that he was ‘not quite where he needed to be.’
p

/p

‘Delon 039;s playing well, he 039;s raring to go, we had no qualms about playing him. He 039;s a very good footballer, he 039;s got a physical presence, an aerial presence, all angles covered.
p

/p

‘I wouldn 039;t have had a problem playing Matt on the wing, he 039;s played very well against Argentina in the past, but we thought Delon deserved his shot.’

Driskill says unhealthy trees are most susceptible to breaking or being blown over, so he tries to spot and remove them before severe weather moves in.
p

/p

He notes that in strong winds, trees like sycamores with a wider canopy are at a great risk of falling, while the thinner-needled pine trees are less affected.
p

/p

“You’ll see a lot of trees fall when the soil is saturated, especially where a lot of trees are situated in an area where the drainage is not as good,” he said.

The Wall Street Journal is phasing out support of the Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) browser. Please upgrade your browser now to enjoy a better experience: Why upgrade?

PARIS If the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, changed the way the world looks at terrorism, they also served as a wake-up call for Interpol, the world’s largest law-enforcement agency.

A decade ago, Interpol was a slow, sleepy, unresponsive institution headquartered in Lyon, a French city better known for its cuisine than for law enforcement. The agency worked 9-5, five days a week and there was little sense among member countries that they were fighting a common war on terrorism.

Prior to 9/11, by Mr. Noble’s own admission, Interpol had become “irrelevant”; it wasn’t taken seriously by countries engaged in fighting terrorists. In fact, Mr. Noble is still smarting from the fact that he was alerted to the World Trade Center attacks by a phone call from his brother in the U.S. telling him to switch on his TV, rather than from a law-enforcement agency asking for help.

Under Mr. Noble’s leadership over the past decade all that has changed. The organization is now the indispensable international clearinghouse for exchanging information on terrorists and other international criminals.

Ironically, just prior to 9/11, Mr. Noble had set in motion a major overhaul of the institution to make sure it stayed awake 24/7 to provide immediate assistance, to streamline its international alert system and to allow police forces around the world to be permanently connected to Interpol’s databases.

Interpol serves primarily as the nerve center for member countries’ law-enforcement agencies to exchange information on international crime. Its areas of expertise cover the gamut of criminal activity, including drugs and human trafficking; money laundering, intellectual property offenses, art theft, organized crime and cybercrime. But cracking down on international terrorism is now a major focus.

If Mr. Noble has one burning ambition, it is to plug the holes that allow terrorists and other criminals to travel unhindered using false documents. He’s been working toward that goal over the past decade, but he’s still only halfway there.

“Last year, there were half a billion searches of our database” of stolen or lost travel documents as travelers had their passports scanned by immigration officials, Mr. Noble says. “The same year there were a billion international arrivals. It means there were half a billion times when the passports of international arrivals were not screened against the only database of stolen passports.” Only 153 of Interpol’s 188 member countries are providing details but not the names on 23 million cancelled travel documents, and the U.S. only hooked up to the system in 2009. What particularly worries Mr. Noble is that only 44 countries he won’t say which regularly check passports against the Interpol database.

“What about the rest? There is no rational reason to explain why every country in the world isn’t connected and doesn’t screen. It certainly is not a reason based on cost,” he says. “Greater priority is currently being given to detecting passengers carrying mineral-water bottles than potential terrorists carrying stolen passports and that shouldn’t be the case.”

The 55-year-old son of a black American GI who met Mr. Noble’s German mother while on active service in Cold War Germany, he learned about hard work as a youngster while helping his father with his cleaning company business in New Jersey.

Ronald Noble attended the prestigious Stanford Law School and, after a stint as a federal prosecutor, taught at New York University School of Law before being nominated by former President Bill Clinton to head the U.S. Treasury’s law-enforcement division. He has led four of the eight main U.S. law-enforcement agencies, including the Secret Service, Customs and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

In 2000, Mr. Noble was elected by the representatives of the 188 member countries to head Interpol, billeted in a massive concrete, steel and glass cube overlooking the Rh& 244;ne river. Last year, he was elected to a third five-year term.

With its annual budget of about 60 million ($85 million) less than the cost of a small Airbus jet Interpol is woefully underfunded for the job that it has to do, Mr. Noble feels. “The priority for Interpol in the next five, 10 or 20 years should be to make sure we have a structure and system in place for sharing crime-related information that’s linked to the internet, to make sure we know who’s behind the click of a mouse or the sending or receiving of a message. To achieve that will require a great deal of money and commitment on the part of our member countries,” he says.

How much? “It should be 1 billion a year. You look at the hundreds of billions of dollars governments spend each year on foreign aid and when you think about which element of foreign aid should be of paramount importance, the answer must be the security of countries and businesses and citizens,” he says. A massive increase in Interpol’s resources “will help us prevent organized crime groups from proliferating in the next 10 years like they have in the past 10 years,” he adds.

Mr. Noble said he has told Interpol’s membership that he won’t seek a fourth term. “I believe the best thing that I can do for the U.S. and all countries is to complete my mandate here at Interpol and then go back to teaching law.” Mr. Noble has a standing tenure for his professorship at NYU, which has allowed him to carry on his other activities while giving him credit for a summer law course that he teaches at the National University of Singapore.

Such a punishing regime comes at a cost, however, in terms of personal relationships and health. “It’s impossible to have a decent family life with hours like that,” he admits. “Now, for the health of my body and mind and a host of other reasons I regularly take time off, which I didn’t do before,” he says, adding that he now meditates and does yoga.
