SALT LAKE CITY Rolling the six-match winning streak forward with a no-sweat sweep, the BYU women’s volleyball team took down UC Riverside 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-16) in the opening match of the Utah Invitational Friday.

“I felt like we didn’t come out with our A game right off the bat, but it’s good to win a match like that when you don’t feel like you’re playing at your best,” BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said. “I’m glad we were able to get through that as a team and learn from it and get better. Wins are always positive things no matter what.”

Opposite hitter Jennifer Hamson and outside hitter Christie Carpenter led the Cougars (7-2) to victory with eight kills each. Hamson also led in digs with 12, her third time reaching double-digit digs this season. Setter Heather Hanneman recorded 23 assists for BYU and middle blocker Nicole Warner contributed six blocks.

CREIGHTON 3, WEBER STATE 0: At Lincoln, Neb., the Wildcats struggled in nearly every facet of play against a strong effort from the Creighton Bluejays on Friday afternoon.

Held to a season-low 19 kills and a negative attack percentage for the first time this season, the Wildcats fell to the Bluejays 25-12, 25-13, 25-18 in their second match at the Players Challenge at NU Coliseum.

Outside hitters Bethany Wray and Briana Wilms each had seven kills to lead the Wildcats. Wray, who added seven digs and four blocks, saw her streak of double-figures kills matches ended at nine.

The Wildcats will remain in Lincoln for their final match of the Ameritas Players Challenge when it takes on tournament host and No. 11-ranked Nebraska on Saturday at 1 p.m.

SLCC SPLITS TWO: At Houston, the third ranked Bruins fought to a two game split at the Patriots Day Tournament. The Bruins dropped game one in five sets to Lee College (25-15 21-25 25-14 19-25 15-17) and battled to a five set win over Panola College (20-25 25-18 25-19 19-25 15-6) The Bruins are 8-2 overall and they will face fourth ranked Blinn College tomorrow at the Patriots Day Tournament.

The Bruins were unable to control the unforced errors in the five set loss. Leyla Redondo led Salt Lake with 15 kills, eight digs and two aces followed by Maddie Bushman’s nine kills and nine digs. Kellie Turner added eight kills with two aces.

Alvaro Saborio scored from 10 yards away early in the 56th minute, and a rare gaffe by Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller resulted in an own goal as Real Salt Lake hung on for a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Saturday.
